Professor Madhava Menon enrolled at the High Court of Kerala in 1956 and for a year and a half; he practiced law under a senior advocate in Trivandrum where the district court was situated close to his house. "It was in 1958 that I left for Aligarh Muslim University where I got a teaching assistantship. I did my LL.M. from Aligarh Muslim University along with my teaching assistantship. It was under the advice of my Professor Dr. Markose who thought that I would make a good career in the academic field... and after much persuasion, my mother agreed." Professor Menon had been brought up by his mother since his father passed away when he was two years old. Professor Menon continued in Aligarh till 1965, after which he joined the Faculty of Law, Delhi University. In 2009 he completed 50 years of teaching. "Time was quite different, practice was quite different. I started off in the criminal side, which I liked of course... but that was a period in which not much payment was made... so to make some extra money I used to participate in radio programmes in the All India Radio. At that time for a half an hour programme they used to give 50 rupees, which was big money. I took on some roles they assigned not for the love of acting but to make some extra money to make ends meet. Practice at that time was not very remunerative...you had to struggle for five to ten years to make money...so you had to have some other activity apart from practice, unless your family is able to support ...
