Born in the slums of Hong Kong, Marvin Quon was introduced to martial arts at a young age. He grew up watching the local kung Fu schools battle it out on the roof tops and in the temple near the high school where he went in his neighborhood. Most of the battles were between the local Choy Lee Fut and Wing Chun schools of which the young, and yet undiscovered, Bruce Lee actively fought for his school run by the famous Yip Man. Marvin realized at a young age that it was necessary to commit to a school and study or be at the mercy of street fighters, and without any support structure to back him up. An uncle, without the knowledge of his parents, introduced Marvin to Master Do Sang a local and highly regarded Choy Lee Fut teacher. Marvin, although he was one of the youngest students, committed himself totally to the rough training schedule that was common in the Hong Kong school at the time. Although he was too young to participate, he used to watch his older school brothers battle it out on the local rooftops. From this he learned a lesson that has influenced his training ever since. All the camaraderie, hard training, tedious sets and just plain fun were secondary to the fact that what he was learning had to work, had to win fights; And this was tested daily against older school brothers and on the streets.
