His father, uncles and aunts sung and danced to the tunes of Arsenio Rodriguez, Septeto Nacional, Ignacio Piñero, Beny More, Vicentico Valdez, Maria Teresa Vera, Acerina y su Danzonera, Chano Pozo y Conjunto Azul, Cortijo y su Combo, Noro Morales, Moncho Leña, Canario, Matancera, Cheo Belen Puigh, Jorrin, Aragon, Mario, Machito and The AfroCubans Miguelito Valdez, Giraldo Rodriguez, and too many to mention here! On the Jazz Side, Armstrong, Errol Gardner, Art Tatum, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Coltrane , Parker, Monk, Ellington, Nat "King" Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, list goes on.. Papo began his professional career as a percussionist with the well known actress, dancer, choreographer and folklorist Ms. Sylvia del Villar, in his native island of Puerto Rico. Early in his professional role, he displayed his talents in every musical genre-from traditional to contemporary styles. Papo's general knowledge is not limited to the musical expression, but also linked to the history, evolution and ritualistic participation of the percussion tools. While still in High School his powerfull and natural way of playing timbales impressed Master and pioneer latin /jazz trap set player Walfredo de los Reyes Sr. which took him under his wing as a private student.
