ORDER OF CHRIST Convento De Cristo Tomar, Portugal Tube. Duration : 10.07 Mins.

Proudly, powerfully and surrounded by fortified walls, the Convento De Cristo Monastery is situated above the town of Tomar, north of Lisbon. Beyond the near impenetrable fortification was the Portuguese branch of the Order of the Knights Templar. The layout and decoration of the Convento De Cristo and its church contain the numerous architectural styles and works of art of various periods. The Knights of the Order of Christ contributed to the final expulsion of the Moors, the liberation of the country and the creation of the Portuguese monarchy. The stabilization of power soon led to the rise of Portugal as an influential nation of seafarers and explorers. In the 15th century, the Knights of the Order of Christ played a significant role in the country's development. The convent's circular building, the charola, was decorated with the jeweler of the 16th century. It was originally inspired by Romanic-Byzantine style that dates back to the days of the Knights Templar. The Convento De Cristo, even to the present day, is full of both historical and religious appeal.
