Moshe Ganchoff 1905 - 1997 "The Cantors' Cantor" Gleaned from many sources (Reprinted from JSM Vol 217 April 2011) Until the very end of his long career, Moshe Ganchoff represented our last connection to the style that earned hazzanut of the early 20th century the sobriquet: Golden Age. He was born in Odessa and emigrated as a young child with his parents to the United States. He received his early hazzanic training in Toledo, Ohio, to which several Odessa-trained cantors had gravitated: Simon Zemachson, Mendel Shapiro and Aryeh Leib Rutman, among them. In his teens he moved to New York for the purpose of studying with Joshua Lind, Jacob Rapaport, and Mordechai Hershman. In 1944 he succeeded David Roitman as cantor at Manhattan's Shaare Zedek on West 93rd Street. In 1957 he was engaged by Grossinger's Hotel in the Catskill Mountains resort area of upstate New York for all major holidays. This allowed him to guest-officiate and concertize widely, as well as to teach and compose. Over a period of 25 years he was featured in a weekly radio program on the Jewish Daily Forward's station, WEVD, and for each show he wrote a new composition. My mom used to play this tune on the hammered dulcimer when I was a kid. I would bet that she could still pull it off if push came to shove. Ironically, it was my mom's doing that got Steve and I playing music together in the first place. Steve taught my mom Hammered Dulcimer lessons, and mom kept telling Steve, "You really need to meet my son, Vi." And she kept telling me, "You really should get together and play music with my dulcimer teacher. I think you guys would really get along." Now, those kind of introductions make me think, "DANGER, Will Robinson, DANGER." But, an opportunity arose last year to coordinate the musicians for FoCo Help Portrait, last year - an event where local photographers provide family photos for families who wouldn't be able to afford them otherwise. This high speed / photography video / slideshow is of a traditional Korean martial arts performance that took place at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon, South Korea. The performance was a phenomenal displace of athletic ability as the Korean men dressed in traditional military/battle attire performed martial arts combat manoeuvres along with coordinated displays with various kinds of weapons. I had help from thatbackpacker to capture high speed footage from my Casio FC 100 camera. I was mostly using my Sony Alpha A65 dSLR with 18-200 mm lens to capture the action stills. http : It was a performance worthy of recommending to anyone. The best part was that it was entirely free. I'm hoping to go back again sometime this year. Suwon, about 45 minutes south of Seoul, is home to a unique group of martial artists. These men and women are keeping alive a set of skills used to teach South Korean warriors fighting. Created hundreds of years ago by studying the strengths and weaknesses of other martial arts, these arts are divided into unarmed, armed and horse-mounted styles. At the daily demonstration only the armed and unarmed styles are performed. The horse-mounted styles are saved for special occasions like the October citizen's festival. Loose Walk -- Dexter Gordon 1964 This was recorded in a small Cafe in Amersfoort in the Netherlands. He was backed up by a Swiss trio with George Gruntz piano, Guy Pederson bass and drummer Daniel Humair. Gordon (1923-1990) was born and grew up in Los Angeles, where his father was a doctor who counted Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton among his patients. He played clarinet from the age of 13, before switching to saxophone (initially alto, then tenor) at 15. While still at school, he was playing in bands with such contemporaries as Chico Hamilton and Buddy Collette. During 1943-44 he featured in the Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson bands, before joining Billy Eckstine. By 1945, Gordon had left the Eckstine band and was resident in New York, where he was performing and recording with Charlie Parker, as well as recording under his own name. Many would characterise Gordon's sound as being 'large' and spacious (a feature partially owed to his big'n'tall physical stature, 6 feet 5 inches), and his tendency to play behind the beat is discernible. One of his major influences was Lester Young. Gordon, in turn, was an early influence on John Coltrane during the 1940s and 1950s. In this second reflection, two strong tendencies are unified inside me:- the first, the impossible illusion to return to the *renaissance* or to the *baroque*, and the second, to assume the responsibility of the *contemporary* in me, with the understanding, sad or not, that I probably form part of *cynisism* that is breathed today in the art. Wat Mahathat Phetchabun, Thailand. on Nikon Bamrung Road in town, houses several ancient Chedi's of Sukhothai style. Situated in Muang Phetchabun municipality. It seemed strange seeing this Temple as there is another Wat Mahathat I visited in Ayutthaya last year in 2010. However this Temple is totally different to that at Ayutthaya as you will see. Within the grounds is a school for the training of Buddhist Monks and many where around the day I visited this fine Temple/ This monastery is an ancient temple which HRH Prince Damrong presumed that this monastery might be constructed during Sukhothai period. Wat Mahathat has the important objects of worship such as, Phum Khao Binth styled pagoda has been presumed that it might be constructed about BE 1926 ( 1383 ). This pagoda is a place that comprises Buddha's relics, Orrahan's ( saint ) ashes, and small images of Buddha in several styles. Two Buddha images of the U-Thong period whose laps are 36 inches wide. One is housed in the main chapel and the other is housed in the vihara of Wat Mahathat.
