Dandanat A Palestinian-Swedish Cultural Encounter A Bethlehem Youth Music Festival The idea to create Dandanat arose from the need to find a place for Palestinian and Swedish teenagers, who are interested in the arts, to meet, discover each other's cultures, exchange know-how, and learn from each other. Dandanat is a Palestinian-Swedish encounter for cultural interaction through music, dance, food, workshops, social gatherings, and tours. It was initiated in 2005 as a joint project between the Swedish Christian Study Centre in Jerusalem (BILDA) and the International Center of Bethlehem (Dar Annadwa Addawliyya). The inaugural event in August 2005 included performances by thirteen music and dance groups, eight from Sweden and five from Palestine. Over a three-day period, workshops were organized in the mornings to introduce the groups to each other's music and to exchange various techniques, styles, and methodologies. At night, live performances were organized at the Ad-Dar Concert and Conference Hall for the public. A wide variety of genres were presented - from folk to rock and roll and from Oriental music to hip-hop. A great exchange and interaction took place where several members from the Swedish groups performed with the Palestinian acts and vice versa. In 2006 the date of the event was moved to June, and this proved to be a challenge, particularly with regard to the Tawjihi exams.
